Standard Winterization
- Stabilize fuel
- Run engine using storage mixture
- Change fuel filter
- Check fuel line and connectors
- Fog engine-inject fogging oil directly into cylinders/carb, throats
- Check spark plugs
- Drain block; drain crankcase oil; replace oil and oil filter
- Check motor mounts; check V belts; clean flame arrestor
- Check battery connections
- Run -100º Freeze Ban through engine; change lower unit oil
- Remove prop and grease prop shaft; check anodes
- Check power tilt trim oil
- Winterize fresh water system (if applicable)
- Remove outdrive and grease U joint (if applicable)
- Check trailer bearings, grease fittings and tire pressure
- **This may or may not include all that you need to do to winterize your boat/engine. So, please refer to your owner's manual for more details.**
Boating FAQs
How often should a boat be serviced?
Regular boat maintenance is crucial for keeping your watercraft running safely and efficiently. Most manufacturers recommend servicing your boat at least once a year or every 100 hours of use—whichever comes first. This includes inspecting the engine, checking fluid levels, replacing filters, and examining the hull and propeller. Seasonal maintenance such as winterization and spring tune-ups are also important to protect your investment from damage due to weather or storage conditions.
What should I consider when buying a new or used boat?
Start by thinking about how and where you’ll be using the boat—fishing, cruising, watersports, or family outings all have different ideal setups. Next, consider the size, engine type, and trailer needs. For used boats, always ask about the service history, engine hours, and whether it’s been stored indoors or outside. A reputable dealer will be transparent and provide all available details, along with helping you with financing, registration, and test runs if needed.
What is boat winterization and why is it important?
Winterization prepares your boat for colder months when it’s not in use. This process involves draining water from the engine and plumbing systems, adding antifreeze where needed, stabilizing fuel, disconnecting the battery, and covering or shrink-wrapping the vessel. Proper winterization helps prevent costly damage from freezing temperatures and ensures your boat is ready to go when spring rolls around.
